In order to legally use a motor vehicle on a public road you must be in possession of a valid policy of insurance covering your use of the vehicle. Failure to do so is a serious offence that may result in a heavy fine, driving disqualification and imprisonment. There are three main types of motor insurance policy: Third Party Only, Third Party Fire & Theft and finally, fully Comprehensive insurance. There are over a hundred companies in the UK offering insurance so there is no excuse to run the risk of driving whilst uninsured. Despite all the silly jokes and myths, women drivers are considered to be a much better insurable risk than their male counterparts. This normally makes any insurance policy taken out by a female driver for her sole use of a car - CHEAPER! Research into national trends and statistics has shown that in fact women do have an equal number of accidents as male drivers. However, because women drivers are inclined to be much less aggressive in their style of driving, the amount of damage caused if they are involved in a collision is significantly less and therefore much more economical to repair and also reduces the likelihood of serious injury. In fact, men are twice as likely to be killed, or seriously injured in an accident than females. Hence, any insurance claim will be that much smaller. Despite the many initiatives designed to encourage people to use public transport more regularly, the car is still the most dominant and popular form of transport for both sexes. However, research shows that men are more frequent users making an average of 5 per cent more trips by car than female drivers. Women have been shown to be much more likely than men to walk to their destination rather than take the car. It is also a fact that fewer women than men have a full licence and are less likely to have a history of road traffic offences. This less frequent use of the car no doubt also contributes to the more favourable insurance premiums available to women. There are of course the usual variations in the cost of an insurance policy for women drivers. Age and driving experience makes a significant difference. Generally the costs of premiums reduce when the driver passes the age of 25, although some companies use the age of 30 as their benchmark. Driving history is also taken into consideration. A history of claims or convictions for offences of speeding or careless driving will indicate that the person seeking to obtain insurance is a poor insurable risk and the premiums will be increased accordingly. Similarly the type of vehicle, its value and its intended use are all taken into account, as is the area where it will be predominately used and kept. Busy cities or high crime areas are considered by insurance providers as a greater risk and the premiums are weighted accordingly. In fact there are the usual conditions and questions that must be answered as when obtaining any insurance and different policy providers have different pricing systems, so it pays to obtain quotes from as many companies as possible before deciding. |
